At the ICSSI, we celebrate the power of visual storytelling in advancing knowledge and fostering innovation. Each year we recognize outstanding poster creators whose work exemplifies excellence in communicating complex ideas with clarity, creativity, and impact. These awards honor individuals who go beyond presenting research to inspiring new perspectives and sparking collaboration. By spotlighting exceptional contributions, we aim to elevate the art of science communication and its critical role in shaping the future of science and innovation.

Best Poster Award /
Best Student Paper Award

All accepted papers are considered for either the Best Poster or Best Student Paper Award. There is no additional application or nomination process. 

Judging will be done by the Best Poster and Best Student Paper Award Committee. Winners will be notified in advance and announced at the Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, June 28th.

Scientific Leadership Innovation Award

ICSSI would like to unveil the Scientific Innovation Leadership Award. The Award will recognize the stellar accomplishments of a cohort of nonprofit, university research leaders in the innovation arena. whose programs and funding decisions have enormous implications for the goals of the science of science community. 

This award is a nomination-based award and candidates may self-nominate. Five categories of contributions would qualify an individual for recognition: 

  • Fostering an experimental approach to federal science and grantmaking, paired with rigorous evaluation


  • Drawing on research insights and evaluation to deploy evidence-backed programmatic or policy innovations

  • Expanding pathways for research and evaluation, including by enhancing data access for the research community

  • Demonstrated success in improving program efficiency or impact. 

  • Supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion in the science and innovation community to cultivate a diverse and equitable profession that’s welcoming to all

As an interdisciplinary convening of experts in the science of science, the ICSSI represents a unique opportunity to showcase the meaningful contributions of under appreciated, high-impact policymakers.

Ideal candidates will be mid to senior-level policymakers with significant program leadership roles, including design and oversight of research grant programs. 

Submission Guidelines:

Submissions must include the nominee’s title, executive or legislative affiliation, a resume or CV, and a short 3-5 sentence, 12-point single-spaced response to the following question:

“How has the nominee advanced the field of science of science and innovation in at least one of the policymaking contributions listed above?” 

The deadline for submission is May 27th, 2022 at 11:59 pm EST. Please email any questions and your complete application package to icssi2022@gmail.com. We will notify you of the decision by June 2nd, 2022. The ICSSI will present the award on Thursday, June 9th at the Awards and Closing Remarks Ceremony.
